Greetings! I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the upcoming holidays. It’s especially fun if you’ve got young children. Mine are now 13 and 18 and the magic of Santa is gone (“Uh, no, Steven, it no longer matters how good you are, Santa is NOT getting you a new car for Christmas!”) but I still love this time of year. One of my greatest joys throughout the year is volunteering on behalf of our space program. Since my first presentation in 1991 at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, I’ve talked to more than 100 groups around the country. Most groups are comprised predominantly of kids.
Being charged with inspiring kids to do amazing things with their lives is an awesome and rewarding responsibility. I’ll always remember the kindergarten class I spoke to about the STS-114 mission with Eileen Collins. Every image in my PowerPoint presentation resulted in cries of ooooh and aaaah in unison. They were so enthusiastic! I just stood there watching and smiling.
Another great memory was the time I set up a 1/10,000,000,000 scale model of our solar system in a park in Skokie. Surrounded by a group of 9- and 10-year-olds and some parents, we walked off the distance, which was approximately the length of a football field. By the time we reached Uranus, we had covered most of the field in distance. You can imagine the reaction when I explained that this was only halfway to Pluto.
The highlight of every presentation is the World’s Cheapest Space Suit. I always ask for a volunteer, but only after I’ve forewarned the throngs of kids wildly waving their arms, begging to be picked, that you can’t be afraid to be slightly embarrassed. Once my astronaut is on stage, I explain that that before he/she can put on the space suit, he/she has to put on the Maximum Absorption Garment – a diaper! By the time I “pressurize” the suit – inflate it with a leaf blower – everyone in the audience is having a good time.
On occasion I’m asked how StanKraft, a manufacturer of membrane switches, got into developing educational space products. I am proud to say it’s because of my passion for space exploration.
I hope that this holiday season you’re able to share your passion – be it space exploration, football, cooking or travel – with some of the children in your life or community!
